1. Sand and clean the greenware. Use a cleanup tool to remove any large amounts of clay left on the greenware, then sand smooth with the sponge. Finally wipe down the greenware with a damp sponge.
2.
Pencil the flowers and leaves on the greenware.
TIP: Draw the flowers as large circles initially to get the placement right,
then draw in the petals.
3. Paint the flowers with a #6-9 Sable brush. For the yellow flowers start painting the petals with 2 coats of Yellow Orange. For the purple petals start painting with 2 coats of Iris.
4. Wax small sections of petals – use long brush strokes in the centre of the petals. These sections we want to be the bright colours.
5. Apply the second colours to the petals. For the yellow flowers use Sierra Yellow. For the purple flowers use Pueblo Purple. Make sure you take the second colour all the way to the edge of the petals.
6. Wax more of the Yellow petals, leaving the edges and tip unwaxed. Apply the final touches of colour near the tip and around the edges with Coral Red.
7. Wax the entire surface of both the yellow and purple petals.
8. Paint the leaves and flower centres. Apply three coats of Chartreuse using long brush strokes.
9. Wax along the central vein lines of the leaves and the entire centre of the flowers.
10. Apply Irish Green as the second colour to the leaves, use two coats.
11. Wax along the central vein lines of the leaves enlarging the current waxed area, leaving the edges and tip of the leaves unwaxed.
12. Apply the Royal Blue Green to the edges and tip of the leaves.
13. Ensure the leaves are waxed completely.
14. Using the Sgraffito with brush tool carve outlines of the flowers, swirls in the centre of the flowers, the veins in the leaves and some random swirls in the background.
15. With a damp sponge, sponge the entire background with Morning Glory.
16.
Put a small amount of wax on a clean tile, dip the sponge into the wax,
then sponge two or three times on a blank section of the tile to remove
excess wax. Wax random areas of the background.
TIP: Do not over wax as you will end up with a very light blue
background.
17. Allow the wax to dry, and then apply two coats of Dutch Blue to the background with the sponge.
18. Apply wax to the sponge and wax more of the background. Allow to dry.
19.
Apply two coats of Midnight Blue to the background with the sponge.
TIP: Make sure the you get Midnight Blue in all the carved areas of the
flowers, leaves and swirls on the background.
20. For the back of the bowl repeat steps 15 to 19.
21. Using a foam brush or large round brush (#10) load the brush with Midnight blue and paint a band around the edge.
22. Remember to sign the back of the bowl, the bisque fire.
23. Glaze using Duncan Diamond Clear Glaze, fire again and enjoy!
