Psychodelic Erosion

Psychodelic Erosion

This design is suited for most platters, but can be modified to suit most types of greenware.

The following colours have been used in this design, however other colours can be used.

Duncan EZ Strokes translucent underglazes:
         EZ013 Cobalt Black

Ceramic Solutions underglazes:

        OS019 Orange

        OS061 Lime
        OS091 Summer Blue
        OS097 Cobalt Blue

The materials needed for this design are:

Sable brush
Liner brush
Sponge
Sgraffito tool

White vinegar

Foam edge-brush
Turntable
Soft pencil

Duncan GL612 Diamond Clear Glaze.

1. Draw the outline of the areas to be textured as on the picture above.

2. Paint “upper” raised areas, this design:
a. Lime (in the two centre areas).
b. Cobalt Blue (in the four areas around the rim).

3. Wax the raised areas with a open sponge (i.e. sea sponge or old one with plenty of holes). The idea is to randomly cover a part of the area in wax, leaving part of the paint unprotected.

4. Using a mix of ¼ vinegar and ¾ water, wash away all paint not covered with wax. Continue to wash away the greenware until waxed areas are raised approximately 3mm. Finally sponge area clean with fresh water.

5. Allow to dry, (approximately 10mins)

6. Paint background colour of areas just worked on:
a. Orange – where you have Lime (in the two centre areas).
b. Lime – where you have Cobalt Blue (in the four areas around the rim).

7. Now wax these painted areas completely.

8. Band blue “stripe” background lines, using the turntable to give an even cover
Summer Blue for the light blue, in the centre and the 2nd stripe
Cobalt Blue for the darker bands.

9. Using a #10 round brush, band black outline lines between the blue bands with Cobalt Black. While this paint is still damp band a thin sgraffito line through the centre.

10. Paint black outlines to the coloured segments of design and sgraffito lines in a wavy pattern.

11. At random then paint black swirls in the Cobalt Blue strips and sgraffito the lines.

12. Turn piece over and create tones of blue bands on the back. (Support the greenware on the turntable using a small towel to protect the painted surface).

13. Finally using a foam edge brush trim plate edge with black.

14. Bisque fire.

15. Glaze using Duncan Diamond Clear Glaze, fire again and enjoy!
