1.  Clean and sponge greenware.

2.  Draw in the bands around the greenware for the plants and animals.

3.  Transfer the design to the greenware with the tracing paper, clay carbon paper or by drawing the design freehand.

Tip: Mark out the locations for the main figures before transferring the designs, this will ensure that they are evenly spaced around the greenware.

4.  Using the No. 4 liner wax the outlines of the animals, trees and flowers. Paint inside the trees and flowers with Cobalt Jet Black, next paint the swirl with Sierra Yellow, then wax the trees, flowers and swirls.

5.  Using Morning Glory and the No. 8 flat brush paint the background behind the trees, flowers and swirls.

6.  With a dry No.3 round brush paint over the morning glory in patches of Cobalt Jet Black leaving about half of the Morning Glory uncovered. Sgraffito lines vertically into the paint while still damp. The lines should not be evenly spaced, as the uneven effect adds to the finish.

Tip: work in small sections so that the paint doesn’t become to dry and chip.

7.  Paint thin bands around the greenware using Indian Summer and a No. 3 Round Brush, then paint a thin line in Cobalt Jet Black on the tree and flower side of the Indian Summer Band, sgraffito a line into the black paint while it is still damp.

8.  Paint inside the waxed outlines of the animals using Indian Summer. With a dry brush lightly paint parts (about 1/3) of the animals black and sgraffito in the lines on the animals’ bodies. Wax the animals. Paint he background behind the animals using Cobalt Jet Black and a No. 8 flat brush. Sgraffito design onto the background of the animal band and the line around the Indian Summer bands.

9.  For the top and bottom bands paint circles with Sierra Yellow then wax the circles, leaving a white ring around the yellow. Paint the squares with Indian Summer in the same style as the animals .Wax the squares and paint the background of these areas with Cobalt Jet Black. Sgraffito a thin line next to the Indian Summer band.

Tip: it is easier to clean the excess paint off the wax while it is still wet, tissues or cotton buds are good for this.

10. Paint the top rim with Indian Summer and inside neck with Cobalt Jet Black.

11. Bisque fire.

12. Roll glaze the inside of the vase and apply 3 coats of glaze to the outside. Many matt glazes work better if fired slowly, check the instructions on the bottle. Fire again and enjoy!
