This design is suited for tabletops but the pattern can be used on other greenware.
The materials needed for this design are:
Duncan EZ Strokes translucent underglazes:
EZ012 Cobalt Jet Black
Liner brush
Sponge
Soft Pencil
Sgraffito Tool
Greenware Carbon PaperDuncan GL612 Diamond Clear Glaze
1. Sand and clean the greenware. Use a cleanup tool to remove any large amounts of clay left on the greenware, then sand smooth with the sponge. Finally wipe down the greenware with a damp sponge.
2. Layout the pattern for the chess board, for the table top used here the size is 36cm, each square being 4.5cm. On either side of the board trace the design on to the greenware with the carbon paper. A standard chess board has a black square in the bottom left corner, This is important to get the figures the correct way up.
3. Paint the board pattern on the tabletop. If desired you can use a different colour.
4. Trace the pattern on either side of the board, one up each way.
5. Outline on knight with Cobalt Jet Black.
6. Paint the other knight in Cobalt Jet Black, and use the sgraffito tool to draw in the white lines. This is easiest if you paint a small section at a time and sgraffito as you go.
7. Sign your name on the bottom then Bisque fire.
8. Glaze using Duncan Diamond Clear Glaze and fire again.
